A community space for art and Ecology

The Hanging Gardens of Brooklyn is an experimental living artwork which serves as an interspecies common within NYC’s public space. Formerly located in Highland Park, Brooklyn, the installation consisted of a massive sculptural pavilion supporting a diverse canopied garden of over 100 plants. The installation integrated its own solar energy station which powered an automated drip irrigation system, along with an environmentally responsive light and soundscape which responded to sensors collecting weather data onsite. The artwork served as an ecologically centered community space to facilitate public gatherings focused on wellness, education, and performing arts, hosting numerous public events in the Fall through Summer of 2021 & 2022. This work was realized with the support of the Brooklyn Arts Council, the City Artist Corps, and NYC Art in the Parks.

Through the NYC Art in the Parks Program, the installation ran in Highland Park on August 29th, 2021 through August 13th, 2022.

Programming & EVents

Over the course of the installation, the pavilion served as a venue for a variety of events and gatherings.

Performance

Education & Wellness
The space also served as an outdoor classroom for the local community. As a unique blend of art, ecology, and engineering, the installation provided a setting to explore topics such as local sustainability, breathwork, mindfullness, yoga, and more.
